Fourth Year Medical Student Rotations
Visiting Student Applications (2022-2023)

Thank you for your interest in completing a visiting rotation in the Department of Surgery at UC Irvine. Starting in August, we will offer visiting student rotations on all core surgical services within the department.The Department of Surgery encourages all interested students to apply as early as possible. The Surgery Department features four-week electives available in surgical oncology, MIS/gastrointestinal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, vascular surgery, advanced trauma/critical care, surgical intensive care, and burn care management. Each of these rotations provide an excellent opportunity to advance clinical skills in preparation for postgraduate training, regardless of specialty.

DEI Visiting Sub-I Scholarship
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

UC Irvine strives to foster a diverse academic community by supporting and training today’s medical students from a variety of backgrounds to be tomorrow’s surgical leaders locally and globally. The Department of Surgery offers 2  DEI Visiting Sub-I Scholarships which allows students the opportunity to experience excellent surgical training at UC Irvine through a 4-week rotation on one of our surgical services from July to October.  Selected applicants will receive a $2000 reimbursement stipend during their rotation to help offset the financial burden of travel and housing.  The UC Irvine General Surgery Residency program provides residents with extensive experience in both common and complex cases, including surgical oncology/breast, minimally invasive, hepatobiliary, cardiothoracic, trauma/surgical critical care, vascular, transplant, colorectal and general surgery.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS/ELIGIBILITY:
- Current CV
- 1-page personal statement describing interest in surgery, future career goals, and commitment to diversity
- Letter of recommendation
- Medical school transcript
- Successful completion of MS3 core clerkships and in good standing
- Completed VSAS application


HOW TO APPLY:
Applicants must complete both the Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) as well as submit the above information in one document to UCI DEI Surgery Sub-I. The application deadline is 6/15/22.
